Paintball Field Revisited

Warzone
Paintball was created in order to expand the sport of paintball in
the Southeast Texas area. The field was set on about 41/2 acres on a
main highway. Yea, it was small by some standards, but it was set-up
well for its size. The coolest thing about Warzone were its
original bunkers. I know, I know, all fields have original bunkers,
but this one had some good ones worth mentioning. The convenient
location was also a big factor for its popularity.

We used lots of different objects, old cars flipped over or burned
out, huge 6’ foot concrete pipes, and countless wooden spools.
Some spools measured 8’ foot in diameter. Sections of the field
were given
some unusual names as well, here are a few of them.

|
The Alley was
named after one of the first paintball businesses in our area
(back in the 80's.) It was a
trail comprised of spools and brush. This area would almost
guarantee a good shot at the pipes. The house in front of Fort Wood
boundaries one end while the Pentagon Pipes rests on the other end.
In a good smash up skirmish, one can use the Alley to make some
headway in any number of games. |

The Canal Side was basically a difficult area to work in the
wintertime. The brush would get very thin. Although thin, it was
still very effective in the dark. The Canal Side trail was mostly
used to cover and hold advancement into either direction on the
field. If you let the canal side fall, that was literally the time to
kiss your backside goodbye.

The Corn Field, was brush grown all over a fence. It was difficult to take
a picture that would do justice to the Corn Field. Just think about
cutting a hole in a thicket with a couple of exits. The trail
was cut at night along the fence and with good reason. This was the
biggest sucker trap at night for anyone in Fort Wood that didn’t know about
it. However, there is a catch. If you were to make any noise, (such
as, step on a twig,) there would be nothing to hide behind except
bushes. A hail of paintballs would fly in your direction if your
position was compromised. The only hope was to lay low until your
opponents decided to conserve their paint. If you used the
trail right, you would have a position behind the fort. Then, it's
all over. The favorite tactic was to wait for a train to come by on
the railroad tracks behind the field and
that was the signal to rush Fort Wood. |

Pentagon
Pipes was total aggression. In my opinion, this was the best game on the
field. The Pipes were about 6’ foot in diameter, big enough for a
man to walk through. What a challenge, in your face paintball one
hundred percent! A player would have to raise the flag of his team and
hold the area until the games end. The time was usually ten minutes. It sounds short,
but on a small field with 30 people, trust me, time drags when you
are inside holding the area. Only one catch, you stood the risk of getting shot close in
this game. But then, why are you playing if you don’t want to get
hit by a paintball? |

Roadover was the forerunner to the Texas Golden Triangle Paintball
League, which came later (that's another story.) We
mirrored this portion of the field. And it was most popular at night.
We would have a regular crowd show up at about 6 p.m., almost
all of them dressed in black. The area was well lit and your shadow could be your friend
or your enemy. A person could remain motionless in an area and an opponent would walk
right past sometimes. There were places like the God Bunker and
the Tree of Death. Hmmm, can you figure out why these places hold
these titles? Center Flag Push was the most popular game on this side of the
field and most games resolved themselves with a glorious ending,
sometimes, not so glorious. |

Warzone Paintball
was open almost two years and some awesome games were held there.

tail kicking days were burned in our memories and that will always
endure as long as we live.
